Privacy Policy
Last Updated: January 27, 2026
Remet ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how the Remet mobile application (the "App") collects, uses, stores, and protects your information.
This policy is written to be transparent, readable, and compliant with applicable privacy laws, including European and U.S. data protection regulations, as well as Apple App Store requirements.
1. Scope and Audience
This Privacy Policy applies to all users of the Remet App. The App is designed for personal use and is not intended for children under the age of 13.
2. Definitions
- Personal Data: Any information that can be used to identify an individual, directly or indirectly.
- Biometric Data: Facial features processed into numerical representations ("face embeddings") for recognition purposes.
- Face Embeddings: Mathematical vectors generated from facial images. These cannot be reverse-engineered into photos.
- Encounter Data: User-generated notes, timestamps, locations, and contextual information about interactions.
- On-device Processing: Data processing that occurs entirely on your device without being transmitted to our servers.
3. Data We Collect
Remet is designed with a local-first and privacy-by-design architecture.
3.1 Data You Provide
- Photos or camera images (used for face recognition)
- Face embeddings generated on your device
- Encounter notes and tags
- Optional contact metadata (when explicitly enabled)
- Optional location data (when explicitly enabled)
3.2 Automatically Generated Data
- Face embeddings derived from photos (on-device only)
- App configuration and preference settings
3.3 Data We Do Not Collect
- No advertising identifiers
- No analytics tracking profiles
- No third-party behavioral tracking
- No persistent device identifiers or device fingerprinting data (such as advertising identifiers, cross-app tracking identifiers, or fingerprinting techniques)
- No biometric data uploaded to our servers
4. How We Use Your Data
We use your data solely to provide core App functionality:
- Recognize and differentiate people you have met
- Organize encounters and memories
- Improve on-device experience and accuracy
We do not sell, rent, or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
5. Face and Biometric Data
Because face data is sensitive, we provide additional detail on how it is handled.
5.1 What We Collect
- Face embeddings — 512-dimensional mathematical vectors representing facial characteristics, generated from photos you provide.
- Face thumbnails — small cropped images of detected faces, used for display within the App.
5.2 How It Is Processed
All face detection and embedding generation is performed entirely on your device using Apple's Vision and Core ML frameworks. No face images, embeddings, or biometric data are ever transmitted to our servers, third-party services, or any external system.
5.3 How It Is Used
Face embeddings are used solely to:
- Match faces across photos to identify the same person
- Help you remember and recall the names of people you have met
- Support name recall practice through quiz features
Face data is never used for advertising, analytics, user profiling, or any purpose beyond the core functionality described above.
5.4 Storage
- Stored locally on your device by default
- If you enable iCloud sync, stored in your private iCloud container, accessible only to you
- The developer has no access to your face data
5.5 Sharing
We do not share face data with any third parties under any circumstances.
5.6 Disclosure
Remet does not have access to your face data or personal data, as all data is stored locally on your device or in your private iCloud account. Because we do not possess your data, we are unable to disclose it to any third party, including in response to legal requests, subpoenas, or law enforcement inquiries.
5.7 Retention and Deletion
Face embeddings and thumbnails are retained only as long as you choose to keep the associated person profile. You can delete face data at any time by:
- Deleting an individual person profile (removes all associated embeddings and thumbnails)
- Using the "Delete All Data" option in Settings
- Uninstalling the App (removes all local data)
There is no automatic retention period and no minimum retention requirement.
6. Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), our legal bases include:
- Consent: For accessing photos, camera, contacts, or location
- Contractual necessity: To provide the App's core features
- Legitimate interest: For basic app functionality and security
Consent is obtained through iOS system permission dialogs and can be withdrawn at any time in system settings.
7. Data Storage and Security
7.1 On-Device Storage
All primary user data is stored locally on your device.
7.2 iCloud Sync (Optional)
If enabled by you, data is synced via Apple iCloud using a private CloudKit container. This data resides in your personal Apple iCloud account, is protected by Apple's encryption and security infrastructure, and is not accessible to the developer or any third party.
Remet does not operate its own cloud storage for personal data.
7.3 Subscriptions and Payments
Subscription purchases are managed entirely by Apple through StoreKit. Remet does not collect, process, or store any payment information, credit card details, or Apple ID credentials.
7.4 Security Measures
- On-device sandboxing
- Apple-provided encryption APIs
- No centralized biometric database
- No server-side storage of personal data
8. International Data Transfers
If you enable iCloud sync, your data may be stored on Apple servers outside your country of residence. Apple relies on appropriate safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) for international transfers.
Remet does not independently transfer personal data across borders.
9. Data Retention
- Data is retained as long as you keep it in the App
- You may delete individual entries or all data at any time
- When deleted, data is removed from the device and from iCloud during the next sync cycle
- Face embeddings and biometric data follow the same deletion policy — no biometric data is retained after you delete the associated person profile
Remet does not retain separate backups once deletion is completed.
10. Your Rights
10.1 GDPR Rights (EEA Users)
You have the right to:
- Access your data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your data
- Restrict or object to processing
- Data portability
10.2 CCPA/CPRA Rights (California Users)
You have the right to:
- Know what personal data is collected
- Request deletion
- Opt out of data selling (not applicable—no selling occurs)
10.3 How to Exercise Your Rights
Because Remet stores all data locally on your device (and optionally in your private iCloud account), you have direct control over your data. You can access, correct, and delete your data at any time within the App without contacting us.
The developer does not have access to your personal data and cannot retrieve, modify, or export it on your behalf.
